Medicine Courses
After completing medicine courses, aspiring doctors must take a three-month unpaid post-degree placement which includes two months in a university hospital and one month shadowing a general practitioner. After successfully completing this, new doctors must pass a state examination and receive their full license to practice medicine. After 2020, this three-month post-degree placement will not be required. However, it is advisable to register for it while studying in Italy.
The duration of medical school in Canada is six years or 12 semesters. The first two years are pre-clinical, with the remaining three years spent in clinical training. The sixth year of study is a year of internship, during which students practice their skills in hospitals under supervision. After completing all the requirements, students are expected to take the state examinations, which cover 5 major subjects. On successful completion of the six-year program, graduates earn the title of ‘Physician’.
A master’s degree in medicine comprises four years of study. The first three years are largely theoretical, with internships. The seventh year is used to prepare the graduates for further specialization. Graduates in the Netherlands are called “basic doctors,” while those in the US are called “internal medicine specialists.”

As a medical student, you must be aware of the competition for medical schools. There are over 550 total places available in medical schools. It is important to note that there are strict requirements for admission. You must score high enough on your MCQ exams in order to gain entrance. But the competition is intense and the acceptance of your application does not automatically guarantee you a place in a medical school. You may be surprised by the number of applicants for a particular medical course.
